Consider target sheet for Unit D

Discuss differences between organisms (plants and animals)

Introduce the term variation

Activity:

1. Circus of objects/pictures - these could simply be objects from the lab

Pupils observe and describe the differences, identifying the features that could be used to tell them apart.

Discuss their ideas with the whole class.

or

if weather permits take pupils outside to observe variation in living things

Explain the concept of variation having environmental or inherited causes

2. Activity to demonstrate relationships between variations

Choose from a) Holly leaves - W/sheet 7Da/1 or b) Bugs - W/sheet 7Da/3, 7Da/4 and 7Da/5

The results can be plotted (line graph for "Holly Leaves", bar chart for "Bugs") to show the relationships between the variations

Discuss the results and introduce the term relationship.

For "Bugs" relationships = black eyed insects have less than 5 stripes, white eyed insects have more than five stripes, longer abdomen have wider head

Plenary       Recap: (i) differences between organisms is variation and (ii) relationships between differences.

Plenary idea = Finish with chocolate bar - you are about to eat it!

Pupils are to sketch graph of length of bar against time

Homework:

Graph from activity 2

Bring picture/photo in of different animals - see next lesson

Resources:

Variety of photos/objects.

Holly leaves

Worksheets 7Da/l, 7Da/3 and 7Da/4

Graph paper

Risk Assessment:

Handle holly leaves with care and wash hands after use

Care needed when taking pupils outside

Throughout this unit pupils should be encouraged to be sensitive to others when considering differences between them
