Lesson Title: Describing Differences

NC Ref:

Objectives:
MK
how to design a way of classifying into groups. Word - classification
SK
- the basic parts of an insect. Words- head, thorax, abdomen.
CK
- how to set up a branching key to identify organisms.

Lesson outline:
Starter: Explain the aim of the lesson is to investigate how organisms are identified building on last lesson

Recap 2 x kingdoms, plus vertebrates and invertebrates

Activity

1. Worksheet 7Dc/5 using a branching key. Discuss.

Concentrate on the differences.

2.   Use specimens or photos of named insects.

Introduce the words head, thorax ,abdomen.

Start with two insects, ask the pupils to record detailed observations give guidance

or example first.

Then ask them to use their observations to design a branching key to identify them.

Can extend this to four insects.

3.   More able students can go on to do worksheet 7Dc/6  then using four insects they can design their own statement key.

Plenary:       Recap insect structure and keys to identify organisms.
