Lesson Title: Hazchem symbols

NC Ref:
Sc3 3g.

Objectives:
MK – that hazard labels are used to warn about dangerous chemicals. Acids can be hazardous. acids and alkalis are chemical opposites
SK – symbols for corrosive, toxic, irritant, flammable and harmful.
CK – how the hazchem code is used.

Lesson outline:

May need a room change to do taste tests or if in science lab
use plastic cups and not beakers.

Starter:

Not all acids are corrosive.  Taste tests of foods.  See CLEAPPS.

or:

Could use 7Ea/6 (from the exp sci website) to get pupils to make up as many names of
acids as possible from the letters provided. The names are all taken from 7Ea
in the Pupil’s Book, and pupils should be able to make the following:

citric, ascorbic, vitamin C, ethanoic, acetic

Pupils given copy of the hazchem symbols, and glue into their

books. sheet 7Eb/3

Pupils tour the room and look at chemicals they will use at school and note the hazchem symbol.

Difference between corrosive and irritant can be shown by demo.

IN FUME CUPBOARD> conc sulphuric added to 1/3 beaker/jam jar of sugar.

If not, conc acid on cotton or paper towels in a beaker. (Goes warm) Sodium hydroxide (alkali) should also be shown to be corrosive.

Dilute sulphuric is an irritant ŕ will not react with the sugar as Vigorously.

Resources: Different bottles and test tubes of chemicals. (Need hazchem labels bottles can be empty!) - arranged around the room. Conc sulphuric (corrosive) + sugar & fume cupboard if available or + cotton or paper towels in a beaker otherwise, dilute sulphuric. (irritant). Mercury, test tube of chlorine, test tube of oxygen, etc.

Worksheets:

Risk Assessment: conc sulphuric and sodium hydroxides highly corrosive. Sulphuric acid and sugar produces sulphur dioxide, fume cupboard only.
