Explaining conduction

Metals, when they are solid or liquid, are good conductors of thermal energy. Most other substances are poor thermal conductors.

The atoms in metals have some electrons that can move about anywhere in a piece of metal. Heating the metal gives these electrons more kinetic energy. They transfer energy to other electrons when they collide with them.
