Lesson Title: On Fire

NC Ref:5-6

Objectives:

MX — burning requires oxygen and makes new substances; oxygen

SK— when materials such as metals burn they form oxides; some products of burning; extra care needed if materials are burnt in 02; word equations can represent reactions; fire will only burn when heat, fuel and 02 are present; oxide, word equation, Fire Triangle

CK— some ways of putting out fires; mass changes that take place during chemical reactions.

Lesson outline:                                                                                                             Timing:

Registration and starter: What gases are in the air?

DEMO BeIl jar over water with lighted candle floating — discuss that oxygen

needed for the candle to burn and water level moved up about 1/5 (20%) as 02                  5-10

  used.

DEMO TEST FOR OXYGEN — will relight a glowing splint.

What is needed for something to burn? Oxygen, heat and fuel — fire triangle.

Notes to books — oxygen 20% of air, required for something to burn, test for

  Draw fire triangle.                                                                                                               10

Method for practical — heating copper in air. Take mass of copper before burnt

in air and then after. Note colour change. Or could use 7 Fd12.

.

  PRAC and clearing up                                                                                                        20

Discuss what was seen — shiny copper metal turns black, increase in mass.

What is the black colour — oxide. A new substance — the product of the reaction

  Results and conclusion into books.

Word equation — Copper + Oxygen --> Copper oxide                                                            15

(shiny metal solid) (colourless gas) (black solid)

Work from page 70 — answer the purple box questions from the book.

Could use the yellow box summary

Resources:

Heat proof mats, bunsen burners, metal tongs, pieces of copper foil (range 1.5cm x 1.5cm to

4cm x 4cm), accurate balance (2 d.p.), goggles.

Homework:

research the different types of fire extinguisher.

Risk Assessment:
Eye protection to be worn by all during demo and the practical
